French Furniture: If the government more powerful than the pen?

Like French cuisine, the French mobile still has considerable cachet. Louis XIV, Regence, Directoire, Restoration: French furniture styles through the centuries have stood the test of time, yet their elegance and beauty in homes today bear, as antiques antique reproductions.

The development of the furniture is a part of French history. Indeed, besides, is the history of France.

Many years ago I did a course in Earth Sciences. Of course, wewas a textbook. The reading and assignments from the school library, which houses many books on the subject.

But the professor gives us a tour of a coral cut over time through a steep wall of streaked, see the cutting of about twenty feet or more rose almost vertically from the ground.

Layer upon layer, stressed that we met on the face of this planet for millennia. A layer was a time when the earth is covered with water. Another described a time whennow the extinct animals roamed the earth. The history of the planet has been recorded in the grooves of the rock.

Nothing is ever written by man, not a phrase he would teach in all the books in all libraries throughout the world, the history of the earth as eloquently or explicitly as the bare rock face.

So it is with French furniture.

Today you can wander through the courtyard of Versailles and relive the incredible opulence that surrounded the Sun KingThe intricate inlay, heavy sculptures, called shells baked with decorations in gold leaf, lions, and of course the sun, a time when the nobility, the spectacle of himself, and gave no excuse for his indulgences.

It also reflects a time when the government shows an appreciation of the arts. The reign of Louis XIV saw the establishment of services in architecture, painting, landscaping, and of course the production of furniture.

How different from the Middle Ages, whenCrime was rampant, and the furniture was discouraging heavy French oak, is a thief! One would also put off by the deep hand carving in the style of churches and cathedrals of daylight.

The Renaissance was, in turn, influenced by the discovery of ancient Greek and Roman. French furniture began similar to Roman and Greek temples and arenas, complete with architectural columns and balustrades.

The influence of women who have begun to earn some 'powerwith their intellectual salons during the Enlightenment, was in a feminine style of furniture against, with the romance of hidden compartments and secret drawers.

After the French Revolution, Directoire style was more subdued, a visual spectacle of the cessation of the monarchy now hated. The emergence of Egyptian motifs tells the story of blood and ill fate of Napoleon's expedition to Egypt.

With the return of the monarchy in the person of Charles X was the return of theof opulence without compromise. Woods was easily carved with musical instruments in the legs and inlaid with flowers, garlands and rosettes.

But then, after Louis-Philippe was another revolution: the industrial revolution. And the beautiful hand-crafted pieces of the past has given way to "set" - set bedroom, dining room set, and remain so on - the staple food of today.

Supplies. Mass production. What will follow? Whatever it is, it will all fade intoThe story, as everything on this earth. And all that will be written and stored on shelves in libraries. And now, on the computer. And what computers can follow.

But, just as with scissors, rock, no written word, but it can be preserved, will always remember the life of past ages, as has carved a massive wardrobe, with the faces of angels, a nice desk with a secret compartment, or bold architectural elements decorated with sphinxes, griffins, andEagle.

They are not reflections of history. There are no photographs of the story. You are history.
